The Landscape of Print

Provide a brief bio about how you entered the industry, what you enjoy, and how it has evolved over the years. With over 40 years’ experience within the printing industry, I started in the business as a pressroom operator running smaller duplicators. I always had the ongoing desire to address customer needs and produce high quality work. That led me to become the GM within one of New England’s largest Commercial Printers. Unfortunately, after 35 years within the same organization, it closed its doors. However, a wonderful opportunity came my way. In 2018, Alan Albergaria, owner and co-founder of Automated Business Solutions approached me with a plan he had to expand its solutions offerings to the local market. ABS was going to enter the production print space. This was a great opportunity for me to assist the sales force, but also create unique value for our clients. I feel my ‘real world’ experience within the commercial print creates trust when dealing with client. My familiarity with Canon production digital presses and other offline finishing solutions also helps when involved in pre and post sales engagement. Leaving the printing industry was a major shift in my career and life. I was starting a new chapter on the digital side. I do enjoy working for ABS, its culture, and supporting the sales team with selling solutions that make our customers successful.

How do you see the role of print technology evolving in modern office environments, especially with the rise of digital transformation and remote work? The advancements in technology over the years have been fun to watch. With the transformation of digital print technology over the years, our clients continue to have the ability to produce high quality prints in house. Printing is not dead. Color quality continues its enhancement and users are now able to address more applications that meet evolving needs. The ongoing change in the workplace environment has created opportunities for me and ABS to provide unique value every step of the way. People continue to seek ways to increase their messaging and branding. My knowledge continues to help clients understand the total process on how they can maximize their technology to get the best quality output.

What innovative print technologies or solutions are you most excited about, and how can they benefit our office operations? In addition to providing strong digital print solutions, ABS provides additional value to assist with the total fulfillment process by addressing specific applications. To name a few examples, customers seek to bind, to print on envelopes, to cut, to crease and to fold just to name a few. Automated Business Solutions has partnered with the most reputable manufacturers that can address these applications in addition to meeting high-quality print needs. Even more effective is our ability to bring these solutions to the standard office. For example, Fiery digital front-end print processers are becoming so sophisticated that an entry-level person can produce a high-level color print at the click of a button. You don’t have to be an expert in color or need to have been a press operator to execute the “press-like” work in-house.

How do you ensure the security of sensitive documents and information in our printing processes? As a commercial print specialist, this doesn’t come up too often with the clients I meet. However, our sales reps are constantly addressing security related to hardware and document workflow. We offer solutions that can maintain confidentiality and security of printed materials.

What are your strategies for reducing the environmental impact of our printing activities, and how do you promote sustainability within the office? This question addresses their commitment to sustainability and the specific practices they implement to minimize the ecological footprint of printing operations. We proactively offer clients strategies that address sustainability. These can be simple conversations or direct actions we implement to help with ‘green initiatives’. One suggestion is simply proofreading your work before printing. This can help reduce paper waste and less running of the copier. Another suggestion sounds like a no-brainer but having folks default to duplex (2 sided printing) is another cost-saving and environmental practice. When considering electrical consumption, there are high-end units out there that do run on less electricity. In the past maybe a client required a 208 V power source. Now there are situations where clients can operate within a 20A environment. The point here is that we can provide feedback on electrical consumption that is important to people considering environmental impact.

Can you share an example of a successful implementation of a print technology solution that significantly improved efficiency or reduced costs for an organization? For me, the installation of a new Canon Imagepress V1000 for a local printer that had some pain with their current digital printer. They struggled a bit to get work out in a timely manner. There also came concerns about consistent print quality and overall registration. However, we also included offset printing into the mix as part of the total solution. We (ABS) ultimately came up with a solution that would highlight their plans to expand digital and take work off their other presses. A high-end digital Fiery processor was provided to simplify their workflow & improve color and speed on heavy stocks. This new solution digital solution was in fact priced more than their current lease for the digital device we replaced. However, we created so much value in other areas that we made it an easy decision for the client to proceed with ABS and Canon technology. The customer is now running more jobs with more up time and less waste. Because of this, we can go to them at any time for a referral.
